At least 15 people died and 44 were injured in a fire in an apartment building in eastern China

Local officials told a news conference that the fire broke out early Friday morning, and a preliminary investigation suggests the fire started on the first floor of a building where electric bicycles were stored.

The building is more than 8 million. of the populous city of Nanjing, located regarding 260 km northwest of Shanghai, in Yuhuatai District.

Until 6 o’clock morning local time (midnight Lithuanian time) the fire was extinguished, and the search and rescue operation ended on Friday around 2 p.m. (8 a.m. Lithuanian time), officials said.

According to them, 44 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Fires and other fatal accidents are common in China, primarily due to inadequate safety standards and poor enforcement.

The country has been plagued by a series of deadly fires in recent months, often due to the negligence of officials, prompting President Xi Jinping last month to call for “deep thought” and more efforts to “reduce … safety incidents.”

In January, at least 39 people were killed in a store fire in central China’s Jiangxi province.

The incident comes just five days following 13 students died in a late-night fire at a school in China’s central Henan province.
