Denmark and Austria are hosting a migration conference on cooperation with third countries on May 6th. The two countries have taken the “lead” in pushing this issue forward, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) said on Friday at a joint press conference with his Danish counterpart Kaare Dybvad Bek in Vienna. Karner cited the British “Rwanda model” as a model.
When asked, Karner said he might “absolutely imagine” something like that. However, the British model is currently “not possible according to European regulations”. However, he and Dvbvad Bek would both consider it sensible to change the rules so that such projects would also be possible for EU states in the future. In Great Britain, the conservative government wants to use the controversial agreement to enforce the deportation of irregular migrants to Rwanda.
In any case, the aim is to “introduce clearer, stricter and more consistent rules” so that Europe is relieved and fewer people die in the Mediterranean, explained Karner with a view to the migration conference in Copenhagen, which brings together both EU member states and selected third countries such as Tunisia and Albania. International organizations and renowned experts will take part. The group of participating countries wants to “pick up the pace together” to expand cooperation with third countries, said Dybvad Bek and Karner.
The EU pact on asylum and migration, which was adopted just a few weeks ago, would not solve the current “big problems” in migration issues, said Dybvad Bek. Currently, the people who arrive quickest are also the quickest to be able to apply for asylum – and not those who need protection most urgently, said the 39-year-old politician from the Danish Social Democrats. By pushing forward cooperation with third countries, the states taking part in the conference, above all Austria and Denmark, would “work very intensively towards a functioning (EU) pact”.
