The audiovisual complex Egyptian Media Production City (EMPC) using the Cintel G3 HDR+ scanner and DaVinci Resolve Studio software from Black magic design to restore Egypt’s film archive.
He The Egyptian Ministry of Culturewho own the original copies of hundreds of film and photographic treasures from the period between the 1940s and the late 1990s, decided to trust EMPC to undertake a task restoration, documentation and digitalisation of its rich cultural heritage. The initiative starts from Cinematographic Restoration Center (CRC)an organization created in 2018 and led by Nada Hossam Eldeen Farahat: “Cinema is a big part of Egyptian culture. However, time is running out to preserve this legacy. For decades, celluloid was the most important recording medium, and many of the original negatives are now in poor condition and regarding to decay, explains the director.
This process of digitizationwhich has been carried out since 2019 using the Cintel scanner from Black magic designis facing a new phase thanks to the acquisition of a new unit Cintel G3 HDR+which it is planned to restore more than 300 feature films. Farahat details how this delicate process will unfold: “After the roll is inspected and manually repaired, the film is cleaned to remove dirt, fingerprints or dust. It is then digitized in real time and in 4K resolution using the Cintel scanner and DaVinci Resolve Studio software, where we do our grading, restoration and mastering work.”
In parallel with the audio and number reader KeyCode It records high-quality audio information from the negative, synchronized with image processing. The Capstan encoder automatically corrects jitter and jitter, even when the scanner speed varies. In addition, KeyKode numbers identify every single frame in the film, dramatically increasing workflow during post-production.
Integration with DaVinci Resolve
For Farahat, the biggest advantage of Cintel compared to other similar solutions its operation along with DaVinci Resolve, since “the information is automatically captured and imported from the program, which allows us to save considerable time.” Likewise, post-production software offers tools to automatically remove dust and dirtlessen flicker, replace parts of the image intelligent and reduce spatial and temporal noise.
Lock 300 films which are currently being restored include dramas, comedies and musicalsand was produced between 1941 and 1995. “Returning them to their former glory will take three years. Then some selected ones will be shown at film festivals, while others will be launched more widely so that cinema-goers can enjoy them once more, concludes Farahat.
