On Wednesday, as part of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the 35th Parachute Artillery Regiment in Tarbes opened its doors to secondary and high school students from the department. If they managed to utilize the military equipment, they especially wet the jerseys for an obstacle course.
Bags, jackets and jeans remained in the wardrobe, instead of a military outfit. This Wednesday, April 24, early in the morning, students from secondary and high schools from the Hautes-Pyrénées met the 35th Parachute Artillery Regiment in Tarbes (RAP), which recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. If they first attended the ceremony to raise the colors to the rhythm of the Marseillaise, the young people were not just there to observe, but “in immersion”.
As part of its participation in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the army organizes the “Terre Jeunesse Challenge”. “We invited students from our collaborating high schools and colleges, namely Sixte Vignon, Saint-Pierre, La Serre de Sarsan and Peyramale, to participate in a sporting challenge inspired by the training of the soldiers of the regiment”, presents Deputy Lieutenant Lisa di Leonardo, communications officer.
Obstacles and moves
During the morning, the red beret apprentices carried out various physical tests, supervised by the soldiers from the 35th RAP. “It’s important, so we started with a warm-up. Then they do several physical exercises from the army test, with squats or pull-ups. We chose exercises where there was still little chance of getting injured, that’s not the goal,” explains the Chief Warrant Officer Tivane.
No injuries either when you tackle the flagship of this challenge, the relay obstacle course. In small groups, the students completed a course consisting of obstacles such as the beam or the ditch, with a sprint of around one hundred meters to pass the baton. Each student passes twice, encouraged by Sergeant Camille.
Motivated students
This morning was by no means an obligation for the students of the Hautes-Pyrénées. Conducted “in small groups”, it specifically serves to strengthen the link between the regiment and its partner establishments that specifically offer training that can be found in the Army. Just over 50 students were present, and mostly they wanted to join.
“We started on a voluntary basis. We chose a 3rd year “prep-trades” class. Those who wanted to discover a little regarding the world of the army and who wanted to take on a sporting challenge signed up”, explains Philippe Saint- Picq, teacher at Sixte Vignon high school. “Personally, I’m happy to be here because I would like to embark on a military career followingwards,” says Leny, from Saint-Pierre High School, barely out of breath as he has just come out of the pull-up exercise.
“It gives us the opportunity to share collective values around sport, but also mutual knowledge between the military world and youth. We use the opportunity to explain to them who we are, to open the doors to the regiment do, the different subjects that make up a regiment We also show the equipment, which is generally very interesting,” he emphasizes. Colonel Tristan Zeller. And it is not the students gathered around the Caesar cannon, the surface-to-air missiles or the parachute attachment that will contradict him. Finally, a small ceremony took place at the very end of the morning to reward the three best teams.
