There are sixteen of them and their names are Clara, Chloé, Eléonor, Jana, Manon, Noémie, Hugo, Lucas, Nathan Le N., Nathan Lev., Shawn, Thomas, Yassine, Zabih, Anastasia, Houari. Aged 17 to 25, they will be the Olympic flame scouts aboard the Belem to bring the Paris 2024 fire back to Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). Each represents a school, an association, a club and a region. These sixteen crew members, selected by Caisse d’Epargne, embark from Athens on Saturday 27 aboard the three-masted ship heading for France and Marseille.

From the port of Pyrée to the Old Port of the Phocaean City, the crossing of the Mediterranean is planned in 12 days. The Belem will point its bow in Marseille next Wednesday May 8 at the end of the followingnoon. From the first day, the boat will take the narrow and spectacular Corinth Canal, currently closed for works which will open exceptionally. Then head towards the Strait of Messina between mainland Italy and Sicily. It will then be the passage of the Bouches des Bonifacio, between Corsica and Sardinia, before Marseille.

At 34 meters, on the main mast

The journey will be accomplished largely thanks to the strength of the wind and the 1200 square meters of sail. Enough to propel the boat, 58 meters long and 8.8 meters wide, at 17 kilometers per hour. These 11 days at sea will be covered by a team from France Télévisions who will provide daily monitoring on board thanks to a satellite link. Two other journalists also boarded the Belem: one from Le Monde and a second from L’Equipe. The flame, in its lantern, will be escorted by two guardians who will ensure that the fire does not go out. And if the improbable happens, the lantern installed in the large roof would then be lit once more thanks to a second which will travel very discreetly.

The Olympic fire might rise to a height of 34 meters on the main mast. This would then be his only getaway because the Mediterranean crossing of Belem will be completed in one go and without stopover. Indeed, once the flame has been transmitted to the local organizing committee, it must remain in the country. It is for this reason that the lantern will spend its last night in Greece at the French Embassy
