Ronnie is a legend in Rennes, a colorful character with his shaggy beard, his beret on the side and a look that lights up when he talks regarding the nuggets of his collection, posters, box sets and especially the vinyls, the work of a lifetime of service to music. Ronnie was a record seller on rue Saint-Melaine, but also a DJ in the 70s in punk clubs in the city. He rubbed shoulders with the booming Rennes scene in the 80s with Etienne Daho and the Marquis de Sade group: “I have more than 300,000 vinyls at home but I really have between 30 and 40,000 collectible records with an official rating“. At 77 years old, Ronnie decided to part with a small part of his thousands of nuggets.
Nuggets
His exceptional collection, put up for auction, begins with the pioneers of rock : Eddy Cochran, Gene Vincent, or even Elvis Presley, whose original gold record will be on sale as well as a 78 rpm from the beginning of the King’s career, an original from 1956. All trends of rock are present as punk, but also French rock, Rennes rocklegends like Johnny or even Serge Gainsbourg with a rarity, one of his first records: “The autographed double 45 rpm in new condition. It dates from 1960 and is the only one in this condition. The cover is very fragile and it is only an edition of 50 copies because the start of Gainsbourg’s career was difficult“.
“I was lucky”
Ronnie is inexhaustible regarding his passion for music, the adventure of his life. He looks back on his golden years: “I was very lucky. When I was a club DJ, a radio DJ and also writing, I received a lot of promotion and at the time, the record companies were very generous. For example, when I worked at People (a Rennes club) in the 70s, I received around 250 to 300 promotions per month. I knew lots of people who collected.“. This Monday, some buyers will be online and it won’t just be strangers: “I still have the same customers, who are between 70 and 80 years old, and who live in Portugal, Japan, USA or England“. The auction will begin at 5 p.m.
