The Minister of the Environment, Susana Muhamad, announced this Thursday that the production of single-use plastics in Colombia will be prohibited as of June 7, 2024.

The measure seeks to significantly reduce environmental pollution generated by these materials.

The initial ban includes 14 products, including laundry bags, popsicle sticks, and disposable plates and cutlery.

The standard establishes exceptions for those plastic products that are 100% reusable.

Minister Muhamad highlighted the importance of this measure to protect the environment and reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in rivers and seas.

“It is a very technical standard that defines various regulatory aspects of the plastic law on the prohibitions that come into effect on plastic products in June of this year,” he noted.

The decision has been received positively by environmentalists, who hope that it will contribute to reducing environmental pollution and protecting ecosystems.

They hope that during the period before the ban comes into force, they will work with producers so that they can adapt to the new regulations.
