The New York Court of Appeals has overturned the 2020 sex crimes conviction of former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The New York Times reports it. The judges, with a majority of four out of seven, ruled that a crucial error was made in the trial four years ago: the prosecutor’s office was allowed to call to testify a series of women who claimed to have been abused by Weinstein, but whose accusations were not part of the charges once morest the producer of Jewish origin. The justification for the decision states that Weinstein was therefore not judged only on the basis of the crimes he was accused of, but also on the basis of his past behaviour.
Now it will be Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg who will decide whether to request a new trial for Weinstein. Bragg is currently also the protagonist of the trial of former President Donald Trump for the 2016 payments to former porn star Stormy Daniels. Weinstein, 71, is in prison in Rome, New York, but in 2022 he also received a 16-year prison sentence in California for the rape of a woman in a Beverly Hills hotel. The main target of the #MeToo protest movement, Weinstein has been accused of sexual crimes once morest over one hundred women. In New York he had been convicted of molesting two of them.
