The United Nations Children’s Fund reports that more than 180,000 children have been displaced in Haiti, which is going through a dire situation due to armed conflict, climate crises and poverty. According to UNICEF, around 50,000,000 people in the country are in need of humanitarian assistance, including 30,000,000 children. The United Nations discussed the plight of Haiti in the Caribbean through a press release issued on April 23.

UNICEF explained that two out of three children in Haiti need humanitarian assistance. Around twenty-seven million of the country’s inhabitants live under the control of armed gangs. Sixteen lakh of them are women and children.

The Child Protection Fund explained that this year alone, more than 2,500 people have been victims of armed gangs in Haiti and there have been more than 400 violations of children’s rights.

Information regarding the situation in Haiti was provided by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell during a briefing to the United Nations Security Council. Catherine Russell said that public life in Haiti is deteriorating day by day.

Years of political insecurity and poor economic conditions have led to the rise of numerous armed groups in Haiti, disrupting public life. UNICEF also reported that many women are victims of sexual violence.

A UNICEF press release says violence and insecurity in the country are hampering the work of voluntary organizations responsible for providing humanitarian aid. The country’s main port, Port-au-Prince, is under the control of armed groups. A number of supplies, including those from UNICEF, intended for distribution to the population, were held at the port.
