Who is Tatiana Blatnik?
Tatiana Blatnik has been described as an “aristocrat from the cradle”, who, as it became known yesterday with an announcement from the former royal family, is getting a divorce from Nikolaos, following 14 years of marriage.
Tatiana Blatnik may not have been born in Greece, but her love for our country grew day by day from the moment she met and fell in love with the son of the former King Constantine. She herself, always elegant in her public appearances and beyond, loves charity, fashion and her life in Athens, which she considers… magical!
Tatiana Blatnik was born in 1980 in Venezuela. Daughter of a legendary, as it is written, playboy of the time, the Slovenian-born Vladimir Ladislav “Lottie” Blatnik, and the German Marie Blanche Bierlein. Her father was then called the “shoe king” of Venezuela. Her mother, once more, has an aristocratic pedigree. She traces her ancestry to the House of Hanover and King George I of England.
Her parents, despite having two children together, Tatiana and her older brother Boris, are said to have never married. However, Tatiana has two other siblings, Igor and Anouska, possibly from her father’s previous relationships. In 1986, when Tatiana is only six years old, she loses her father. Others attribute the causes of his death to a car accident in Gstaad, others still speak of unclear circumstances of death.
At Aiglon, a few kilometers outside Gstaad, Tatiana Blatnik will be toughened both physically – with mandatory weekly snow hikes, grueling ski lessons and a camp in the Alps – as well as mentally, as her school’s motto is “God is strength my”. The acquaintance and the glamorous marriage that ended
They met in 2001 in Gstaad, Switzerland. The two felt from the first moment that one is the other half of the other, and the relationship did not take long to come. In the following years, Tatiana Blatnik was constantly by Nikolaos’s side in his official appearances and everyone spoke of a strong love.
“Yes, it was love at first sight, but there was a long period of courtship. He was very kind to me. He approached me in a very romantic way. I was still in Washington then. Nikolaos lived in London. We used to send letters to each other. We probably hadn’t gotten used to e-mails yet,” Tatiana Blatnik had revealed in an interview regarding their meeting.
The couple’s engagement was officially announced on 28 December 2009 by the office of former King Constantine in London. The couple’s wedding took place in Spetses, on August 25, 2010, in the presence of many members of European royal families. Important attendees at the wedding were Queen Margaret II of Denmark, Queen Sofia of Spain, Prince Michael of Kent, Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway and Willem-Alexander, Crown Prince of the Netherlands.
Life in Greece
“Nicolas and I moved to Greece two years ago, when the crisis had started. At a time when many wanted to leave Greece, we settled here. Nikolas had as his dream to live in Greece”, said Tatiana Blatnik in an interview in 2015.
“I enjoy the simple things in Greece, like going to the grocery store, which I love because I cook. It took me a long time to get used to eating late dinners in Greece, but now I’ve adjusted to most things. I cook, clean, peel carrots and potatoes, walk the dog, walk in nature, take care of broken plumbing…just like everyone else! If I thought I was beautiful, well-off, a princess and everything was perfect, I wouldn’t be sitting here discussing all these things,” she pointed out.
“I want to show the world that it’s okay not to be perfect. The first time I saw Greece, it was through the eyes of my husband. I envied Greece, because Nikolaos was very much in love with her and she was like the other woman in the house. When I moved now, I let go and created my own Greece”, he has said.
