Tunisia, Algeria and Libya in talks on a regional coalition

The aim of the coalition is to promote “security, stability and development throughout the region”, says Tunisia’s Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar in a statement.

– This consultation should not be limited to political issues, but should include all areas of economic and social development for the citizens of the three countries, says Ammar. The plan is to hold similar meetings every three months.

The decision to hold the meeting was made by the three countries’ presidents when they met at an energy summit in Algeria last month.

No leaders from Morocco or Mauritania were present at Monday’s meeting. When the gathering was announced last week, Moroccan media said it was part of Algeria’s plan to form a “Maghreb alliance” once morest its regional rival, Morocco.

Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune, for his part, recently said that the creation of the new coalition “is not aimed at any other state”, and that the door is open to “our neighbor to the west”, i.e. Morocco

An earlier cooperation – the Arab Maghreb Union, which was established in Morocco in 1989 – broke down as a result of the rivalry between the two neighboring countries. Diplomatic relations between Algeria and Morocco were severed in 2021 following Morocco normalized its relationship with Israel.
