ZEAL & ARDOR announce new album “Greif” for August 23, 2024! You can already hear the new single “To My Ilk” now!
ZEAL & ARDOR is not just a band. But a living, breathing being. And like any other sentient being, it consumes, evolves, and transforms from one cycle to the next. His form may change, but his spirit remains the same. Founded and led by Manuel Gagneux, it has sharpened its claws, grown its teeth and steeled its nerves over the years, becoming increasingly undeniable and unpredictable.
After tens of millions of streams and much praise from international critics, this beast proves to be dynamic and dangerous on its fourth, self-produced album “Greif”, which will be released on August 23, 2024 via the band’s own label Redacted (distribution: The Orchard). as ever.
The album title “Greif” is inspired by an annual tradition in Manuel’s hometown of Basel, Switzerland. A mythical hybrid creature walks through the streets for the children as a symbol of the working population of Basel, which is defending itself once morest the oppressive elite. Given the animal’s fusion of energy and physicality, the name is apt.

“The griffin is a lion, a snake and a bird”, explains Manuel. “During the parade, he turns his back on the aristocrats and mocks them. To a certain extent it reflects today’s society.”
As we begin this next chapter, ZEAL & ARDOR have decided to first present the conclusion of it by releasing the wistful and poetic final track “To My Ilk”. A loose blues guitar snakes around powerful claps as Manuel’s voice echoes through a choir. “It has a different level of emotion and it came out exactly how I imagined,” he notices.
In 2017, Zeal & Ardor cemented themselves deeply in pop culture with their groundbreaking debut, Devil Is Fine. Between the worldwide tours, the band developed with STRANGER FRUIT [2018] and ZEAL & ARDOR [2022] continue consistently. In addition to the acclaim of numerous international publications, the UK Metal Hammer raised the “Almost perfection” with a 4.5 out of 5 star rating and the German counterpart noted “There is hardly anything more exciting to be found in the vast realms of heavy metal at the moment.”.
The band graced the cover of numerous publications, while the album charted at the top of the charts in several countries worldwide.
Despite the praise, Manuel decided to change the recording process for GREIF. Instead of being creative on his own, he brought in his band – Tiziano Volante [Gitarre]Marc Obrist [Gesang]Denis Wagner [Gesang]Lukas Kurmann [Bass] and Marco Von Allmen [Schlagzeug] – into the studio to record the new album with them.

“We have really developed into a tight-knit unit,” Marc adds. “Before Zeal & Ardor we were basically strangers, but now we’re like a little family. Each member brings their own touch to the mix and we all try to make Manuel’s songs better in our own way. The most interesting part for me was the new approach that we were all in the studio together.”
After moving to Marc’s studio Hutch Sounds in Switzerland, the album was created in just five months. Gagneux took advantage of the talents of his colleagues, for example by using three voices for the first time and enlivening the sound from all directions.
“I wanted to expand what we had and introduce new colors,” continues Manuel. “There are angry and accusatory moments, but also some comfort and happiness. I’m expanding the palette of colors we can paint with. We’re exploring new avenues that we haven’t tried before.”

“We invite listeners to experience the full spectrum of different sides and sounds that make up Zeal & Ardor,” says Titian. “There are some great moments and there is also a lot of intensity and charm in the album. There is both a certain intention and an element of chance in Manuel’s songwriting and the contributions of all of us. I can’t wait to see people’s reactions.”
ZEAL & ARDOR are preparing for an extensive tour that includes headline dates, festival appearances and several shows as special guests with experimental folk band HEILUNG.
