The main settlement in Oslo underway: – Do not hesitate to strike if necessary

The parties to the settlement met at 1 pm to hand over the demands.

The Oslo trade union, which represents more than 16,500 employees in Oslo municipality, demands the same wage supplement for all. They believe this will give a boost to the low-paid in the main settlement for the municipality.

– The solution must be kroner supplements and not percentages, says the Trade Union’s Per Egil Johansen, who is head of negotiations for LO Kommune Oslo.

The negotiations are conducted between Oslo municipality at the city council’s finance department, and the four negotiating associations LO Kommune Oslo, Unio, Akademikerne and YS.

– Do not hesitate to strike

– We further demand that the entire settlement takes place through collective negotiations at central level and that wage supplements are given in full on the wage table. This means that we say no to local negotiations. We hope to avoid a strike, but we do not hesitate to strike if necessary, Johansen continues.

Leader of the Oslo Trade Union, Roger Dehlin, says their members have seen their purchasing power weaken in recent years.

– This is a development that cannot continue. This year, the employees in the municipalities must be better protected. That’s why we demand a salary development in line with the front subject in 2024, says Dehlin.

Demand real wage growth

The academics are demanding real wage growth for their members in Oslo municipality.

“Knowledge, effort and responsibility must be recognized with competitive pay,” says Julius Okkenhaug, head of negotiations for Academics in Oslo Municipality.

He says Oslo municipality is dependent on skilled employees with a high level of education to achieve its goals in areas such as climate, psychiatry and schools.

– Oslo needs, among other things, qualified lecturers in the schools, engineers who contribute to green transition and psychologists who can make things better for the mentally ill in Oslo, says Okkenhaug.

Neither floor nor ceiling

The front-line professional parties have estimated an average wage increase of 5.2 per cent, an estimate which the Academicians believe is neither a floor nor a ceiling for subsequent collective bargaining. They believe that it is the salary development in the frontline profession over time that sets the standard, not the estimate each year.

– The battle for highly educated labor is great, and the public sector must offer competitive wages to win the battle for heads.

The parties have until midnight on the night of 1 May to reach an agreement. If the negotiations are unsuccessful, the settlement proceeds to mediation with assistance from the National Ombudsman.

Oslo municipality is a separate tariff area and is not covered by the negotiations in the KS area.
