The Return of UN Human Rights Office to Venezuela: Nicolás Maduro’s Announcement and International Response

The dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced on Tuesday the return to the country of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, expelled in February following expressing concern regarding the arrest of the activist Rocío San Miguel.

The high commissioner expressed ““deep concern” with the arrest in February of Rocío San Miguel, an expert on military issues, accused of terrorism for her alleged links to a plan to assassinate Maduro.

The Technical Advisory Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was installed in Venezuela in 2019, when the former president Michelle Bachelet He occupied that position.
