An Australian study published in the journal Diabetes Care attempted to determine whether the time of day you exercise has an impact on weight loss. Researchers have discovered that there is indeed a time of day that provides more health benefits for people suffering from obesity. Morning, noon or evening, what time should you exercise to get the most benefits?
Researchers from the University of Sydney, Australia, followed the lifestyle habits of 30,000 people over 40 for 8 years. All were considered overweight and around 3,000 had type 2 diabetes. Using data recorded by wrist accelerometers, participants were classified into three categories based on whether they did their workouts in the morning, followingnoon or evening.
What time to exercise for better health?
Based on these data, researchers found that people who did most of their moderate to vigorous physical (cardio) activity between 6 p.m. and midnight had the lowest risk of premature death and death from cardiovascular disease.

What types of exercises?
Instead, the study focused on tracking continuous moderate to vigorous physical activities over periods of 3 minutes or more. Indeed, previous research has already shown a strong association between this type of activity (cardio), blood sugar control and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease compared to activities performed more intensely over shorter periods (anaerobic ).
Brisk walking, mowing the lawn, digging in the garden, swimming and dancing are considered moderate physical activities. Carrying heavy groceries or other loads up and down stairs, jogging, hiking, or taking a fitness class are strenuous activities.
“We did not discriminate on the type of activities we followed, this might be anything from brisk walking to stair climbing, but it might also include structured exercise such as running, professional work or even vigorous cleaning of the house,” said Dr Ahmadi, a National Heart Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the Charles Perkins Center at the University of Sydney.

Exercising in the evening to counteract glucose intolerance
According to Dr. Angelo Sabag, senior lecturer in exercise physiology at the University of Sydney, the fact that cardiovascular health improves in people who exercise in the evening can be explained by the phenomenon of glucose intolerance. “It is at night that our body is most resistant to insulin and for those who cannot produce more insulin to compensate for this resistance – which was the case for some people included in our study – the fact of practicing physical activity at this time might offset some of the natural insulin resistance during the night. »
“Additionally, recent results from a smaller clinical study showed that exercising later in the day further improved blood pressure, which is an important risk factor for premature death and cardiovascular disease. »
“Exercise is by no means the only solution to the obesity crisis, but this research suggests that people who can schedule their activity at certain times of the day can better offset some of these health risks” .
Smaller clinical trials have shown similar results, but the breadth of participant data in this study, the use of objective measures of physical activity, and real-world outcomes, such as premature death, make these results significant.
