CHICAGO, Oct. 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Microsoft’s latest investment advances the scale-up and global deployment of LanzaJet technology to produce sustainable aviation fuel and green diesel

LanzaJet, a leading technology company and sustainable fuels manufacturer, today announced an investment from Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund. This investment from Microsoft will help LanzaJet further expand its capabilities and capacity to deploy its sustainable fuels technology globally. Additionally, LanzaJet and Microsoft will explore how Microsoft can provide its data and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to enhance LanzaJet’s corporate capabilities and ethanol in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) process technology.

This investment in LanzaJet follows $50 million in project funding from Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund in 2022 to support the construction of LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels in Soperton, Georgia, the world’s first manufacturing facility from Ethanol to SAF, which opened in January 2024. LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels will begin producing 40 million liters of SAF and renewable diesel annually in the second quarter of 2024.

“Our long-standing collaboration with Microsoft enables LanzaJet to rapidly expand its team and capabilities to support the global deployment of its leading sustainable fuels technology,” said Jimmy Samartzis, Chief Executive Officer at LanzaJet. “By supporting the first ethanol LanzaJet’s SAF biorefinery, LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels, “Microsoft has taken on an important role in making SAF production in the U.S. a reality. This investment further underscores its strong commitment to decarbonizing challenging sectors.”

Microsoft’s investment in LanzaJet gives the company access to sustainable fuels – SAF and renewable diesel – as well as SAF certificates (SAFc) of future LanzaJet projects. Access to these products will help Microsoft become carbon neutral by 2030.

“Microsoft is proud to support LanzaJet with our investment in growing its business with sustainable fuel technology,” said Brandon Middaugh, Senior Director, Climate Innovation Fund, Microsoft. “Microsoft is investing in partners that support our commitment to driving net zero Sharing the economy and building the market for important solutions such as SAF and renewable diesel.”

In addition to Microsoft, LanzaJet’s investors and backers include All Nippon Airways (ANA), Breakthrough Energy, British Airways, LanzaTech, Mitsui & Co., Shell, Southwest Airlines and Suncor Energy.
