The Link Between Fast Food and Cancer Risk: Scientific Discoveries Revealed

Scientists have revealed a worrying relationship between fast food consumption and a higher risk of cancer.

A team of researchers from Singapore has discovered that eating foods high in fat and sugar triggers the body to produce a compound that can turn off an important gene that suppresses tumors.

In a pioneering discovery, scientists confirmed that methylglyoxal has the ability to stop the action of the cancer-fighting gene BRCA2.

“Methylglyoxal destroys the BRCA2 protein, thereby reducing its levels in cells,” Dr Ashok Venkitaraman, lead researcher and director of the Cancer Research Center at the National University of Singapore, told Medical News Today. “This effect is temporary, but it can occur and last long enough to inhibit the function of BRCA2 in preventing tumors.”

Dr Venkitaraman explained that frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods, high in fat and sugar, can lead to increased genetic damage and thus increase the risk of cancer.

The researcher added: “We found that methylglyoxal inhibits the function of the BRCA2 gene in preventing tumors, which ultimately leads to defects in DNA, which are harbingers of cancer development. »

The study also indicated that people with diabetes and prediabetes often have high levels of methylglyoxal in their bodies, so they should be more careful when consuming fast food, processed foods and sugar.
