Football: Manchester United lost 3-0 and were helped by VAR – to the FA Cup final

Dane Rasmus Höjlund became the big match winner when he made it 4-2 in the penalty shootout. He ran out to the fans and shouted his happiness as there were tears in the Coventry camp.

– That sums up our season, we had good control and played well for 60 minutes but then we lost the game from nothing, says Man United defender Harry Maguire to ITV.

With 19 minutes of regular time remaining in the neutral ground at Wembley in London, Manchester United were leading 3-0 and everyone in the stadium was looking forward to a city final once morest Manchester City.

Coventry had the winning goal disallowed by VAR

Then Coventry started the recovery with two goals in less than ten minutes 2-3 but it still didn’t look like it was enough. However, Coventry were awarded a penalty which Wright saved in the 95th minute – this in extra time of regular time. Wild joy from the Coventry fans among the 83,000 in attendance while the Man U fans mightn’t believe their eyes.

– We put ourselves in a difficult position and should have settled it earlier, but we didn’t. We need to do so much better. The standard at this club is much higher than what we have done. We have to do better in the league, the League Cup and in Europe, says Bruno Fernandes.

“Prominent place in the club’s history”

The extension looked like it would be goalless but in extra time the Dane Victor Torp pushed it 4-3 and completely crazy scenes broke out in the national arena.

During the jubilation, an offside was reviewed by the VAR in the build-up phase of the attack and a line was put out in the television broadcast where it was difficult to see if it was even offside. But the referee disallowed the goal.

– We have just told them that they have placed themselves in a prominent place in the club’s history. People will be talking regarding this match for a long time. I mightn’t be more proud of the players, says Coventry coach Mark Robins.
