«Starlink does not compete with fiber, but the price can shift the balance»

New passage of the Starlink-Tim chapter. The deadline for both companies to send the technical data preliminary to the start of a simulation to estimate any interference is set for Wednesday 24 April. The outcome of the analysis will be provided to the companies within the following 20 days, so as to indicate a solution aimed at coordination between the parties. And to put a stop to a growing market, which has potential for development, but which will not be able to compete with fibre. Just to be of support in areas that are difficult to reach with the more “traditional” ultra-broadband.

Pay attention to the price issue however, which might shift the balance in the future. Antonio Capone, professor of Telecommunications at the Polytechnic of Milan, is convinced of this

Starlink plans to roll out its service in Italy. How much market can there be in our country for satellite internet?

Starlink is actually already present in Italy with its service and, from the public information available, plans to extend it in the near future with investments in new ground stations that will increase its capacity. Internet access with low orbit satellites such as those of Starlink, but also of other companies that are developing them such as OneWeb, is suitable for peripheral areas and far from cities where terrestrial fiber network infrastructures are typically too expensive . The latest data from Agcom say that in Italy in these areas, the so-called white areas where there is no broadband network infrastructure and not yet covered by Ftth fiber development projects, there are 5.8% of families. Of these, a maximum of 2-3% will hardly be covered by fiber due to the high costs that make the market a potential market of up to around 500 thousand families. A market which, however, is still too large for reasons of network capacity even for an advanced satellite system like that of Starlink and which, at least in part, is manned by other terrestrial operators and other technologies such as FWA ones.

Can satellite internet be competitive in Italy?
