Army: DRC records largest increase in military spending in the world in 2023

The annual report of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri), published on Monday and reviewed by the editorial staff of NEWS.CD, indicated that the Democratic Republic of Congo had the largest increase in global military spending with more than 105% in 2023, driven by clashes between the Congolese army and non-state armed groups in the east of the country.

“The largest percentage increase in military spending of any country in 2023 was seen in the Democratic Republic of Congo (+105%), where there is protracted conflict between the government and non-state armed groups,” it said. The report.

According to the same source, South Sudan recorded the second highest percentage increase (+78%), particularly in a context of internal violence and fallout from the Sudanese civil war.

Overall, according to Sipri data, total global military spending for the year 2023 amounts to $2,443 billion, an increase of 6.8% compared to 2022.

Global military spending recorded last year, according to this report, was the highest on an annual basis since 2009.
