Addis Ababa, April 22 (APS) – The tenth session of the African regional forum on sustainable development, which opens Tuesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is expected to highlight the “capital importance” of efforts to ensure the integrated implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 of the African Union, taking into account the synergies existing between these two development programs, we learned from the organizers.
“Strengthening the African Union’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: effective implementation of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions ”, is the theme of this meeting.
The United Nations 2030 Agenda aims to ensure sustainable and inclusive economic growth as well as social inclusion and protection
of the environment, in a spirit of partnership and peace. It constitutes the “most comprehensive” action plan to date to eliminate extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and protect the planet, according to the United Nations.
The United Nations Agenda 2063, as far as it is concerned, focuses on so-called flagship projects in areas such as infrastructure, education, science, technology, arts and culture, programs identified as essential for accelerate economic growth and development in Africa, but also to guarantee peace on the continent.
According to the organizers, this African regional forum on sustainable development is also intended to be a place of mutual reinforcement, thus establishing a framework for sustainable and transformational development on the continent.
The overall objective of the tenth session of the African Regional Forum is to undertake regional monitoring and review of progress, facilitate peer learning and propose innovative and transformative solutions and measures. , in order to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the aspirations, goals and targets of Agenda 2063.
For the specific objectives, this involves reviewing the progress made, the difficulties that arise and the potential that exists in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063.
It is also a question of carrying out “an in-depth review” of the achievement, in Africa, of the sustainable development goals, in the spirit of the high-level political forum for sustainable development of 2024, scheduled for next July.
Two high-level round tables are included in the agenda of this forum, the first being expected to set the tone of the meeting “by providing high-level guidance on the priorities and actions to be taken to eliminate poverty and save Sustainable Development Goals, notably by accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in parallel with the second Ten-Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063”.
The second roundtable will focus on “how to leverage the Future Summit to get back on track to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.
Participants in the forum are called upon to “identify appropriate measures to mitigate the impacts of multiple crises and accelerate the implementation of the two development programs”.
They will also work on the interconnections between the different sustainable development objectives, defining and promoting “integrated action to achieve multiple objectives in a coherent manner, while ensuring that no one is left behind”.
The deliberations will be informed by a concise analytical report covering each of the sub-themes.
Presentations and debates are on the agenda of the meeting, in the presence of members of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), United Nations resident coordinators, as well as representatives of major groups and other stakeholders.
The discussions will focus “on transformative trajectories and ambitious measures for accelerated implementation of the two development programs […]”.
The opening of the session of the tenth edition of the forum will be marked by the presence of numerous personalities, including the President of Ethiopia, the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, the President of the African Union Commission.
The president of the African Development Bank, as well as the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, among other personalities, are expected at this meeting.
