A photo taken in Gaza has been awarded the 2024 Press Photography Award.
This award of the World Press Photo of the Year award has been given to the British news agency Reuters photographer Mohammad Salem.
The award was given to Muhammad Salem for a photograph taken in Gaza, in which a woman, Anas Abu Muammar, is sitting with the body of her five-year-old niece.
This photo was taken on October 17, 2023 at Nasr Hospital in Khan Yunis, Palestinian Territory. The photo was taken when people were identifying the bodies of their loved ones.
Martyred and injured people were brought to this hospital as a result of the Israeli bombing.
More than 33,000 Palestinians have been martyred so far in the bombing and attacks of the Israeli army on Gaza.
The story behind the photo
The story of this photo was also released by Reuters. Khabar Agency photographers were at Khan Yunis Hospital on October 17 when they saw a young woman sitting in the corner holding the dead body of a child.
The woman was sobbing and hugging the deceased tightly.
According to Salem, this picture captures everything that is happening in Gaza.
The dead girl in the photo was five-year-old Sally. As a result of the bombardment of the house, Sally’s mother and sister were also martyred.
Anas was very close to her niece Sally.
When she reached the hospital, she lost consciousness following seeing the dead body. He hugged the girl. According to Anas, the doctors told him to separate from Sally, but she replied, “Let me be.”
Sally’s four-year-old brother Ahmed was spared from the bombing because he was outside the house.
But now he rarely speaks, and if he does, he asks where Sally is.
