With a brilliant ceremony and a crowd of people, Kalambaka welcomed the Olympic Flame today, in the framework of the Torch Relay for the Olympic Games “PARIS 2O24”.
The Olympic Torch Relay began with the reception of the Olympic Flame at the junction of Pindos and Trikala Streets, with a route from Trikala Street ending at the Town Hall Square in front of the fountain, where the welcoming ceremony took place. The flame was carried by the torchbearers Vasilios Sakkas, Spyridon Liakopoulos, Mina Kalkanis while the altar was lit by the Olympic champion, former international basketball player Efthimis Renzias. Then with the Flame lit once morest the background of the imposing Sacred Rocks of Meteora, followed the speeches on behalf of the municipal Authority, the Olympic Committee and the French Republic.
The mayor of Meteora, Lefteris Avramopoulos, welcomed the officials and the Flame to the municipality of Meteora and emphasized, among other things, during his greeting: “Your presence here today fills us with pride, as we become communicants and ambassadors of the symbols that the Olympic Games have carried since ancient times: peace, truce, solidarity, the fellowship of peoples, non-violence, the sanctity of human life, the values of respect, equality and justice”. The consul of France in Thessaloniki, JeanLucLavaud, addressed a greeting, who emphasized that “the embassy of France and the organizing committee of the 2024 Olympic Games are here today, together with the Greek Olympic Committee to highlight the Olympic Ideal and the values of Olympism that make up our common cultural heritage, but also the bonds of friendship that unite France and Greece”.
Finally, on behalf of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the chairman of the Torch Relay committee, Athanasios Vassiliadis, addressed a greeting, who noted that “we join our voices with the local communities and broadcast the message of the Olympic Flame: peace, love and fellowship of the peoples”. Kalambaka said goodbye to the Flame and wished her good luck on her long journey around the world, until the Summer Olympics this August in Paris.
The Olympic Flame crossed Trikala
Previously, the Olympic Flame had passed through the city of Trikala. In the Torch Relay of the 2024 Olympic Games in Trikala, the regional governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas, took part, alongside the legend of Greek sports, pole vaulter, Christos Papanikolaou.
Mr. Kouretas accepted the great honor of the Hellenic Olympic Committee to be in the Torch Relay of Trikala, accompanying a historical figure of Greek sports, the first Greek world record holder in athletics, Trikala athlete H. Papanikolaou.
