On April 24 at 4.30 pm, there will be exactly eight months left until the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter with which the Pope will officially launch the Jubilee 2025. Thirty-five weeks to accelerate on all fronts, from the realization of the works to the development of the devices security to guarantee the best welcome to at least 32 million expected pilgrims.
The update on the progress of the work arrived last Tuesday from the extraordinary commissioner, the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, at the 13th meeting of the control room convened at Palazzo Chigi by the undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano. And it can be summed up with a percentage – 27% – which indicates how many interventions are currently completed (+2) or underway (57) out of the 218 foreseen by the latest remodulation, net of 13 whose cancellation from the program has been requested . The same sums remain at stake: 2.9 billion, to which are added the 500 million of the Pnrr Caput Mundi measure which, with the remodulation of the Plan negotiated with the EU Commission, was granted a discount for 2024. In fact, it was halved from 200 to 100 the number of archaeological and cultural sites to be redeveloped by at least 50% by the end of the year.
There is no escaping the fact that Rome is an open-air construction site. The question is how much it will still be in December. The bet is in full swing. To the only intervention that was already completed in February (stopping the deterioration and securing the area where the events area is to be built in Tor Vergata near the Vele della Città dello Sport) a procedural target has been added: the conclusion of the competition design for the new archaeological walk of the Imperial Forums.
For the rest, apart from the 57 interventions underway (almost doubled compared to the 32 in February), another 44 measures are scheduled to be “imminently launched” by May. A further 18 are in the tender, seven in planning with works already awarded, 90 in planning without assignments. Added to this package are the works envisaged by the Prime Ministerial Decrees dedicated to healthcare and Ares 118, all in the planning phase.
Where we try to run the most is naturally in the area around the Vatican, where the most complex work entrusted to Anas is located: the Piazza Pia underpass (70 million), which will allow the pedestrianization of the route from Castel Sant’Angelo to St. Peter’s . The construction site opened at the end of August, work is underway to move two sewer collectors and excavation of the new underpass is regarding to begin. The goal is to complete the work by December 8th. The restyling of the Via Ottaviano-San Pietro route (4 million) and of the Via Stazione San Pietro-Passeggiata del Gelsomino route has also started, while work on the pedestrian underpass in Via Gregorio VII should begin by the end of the month. Again in the Prati district, the redevelopment of the historic pavements has begun and should be completed by the summer. Also at the beginning of April, the construction site was opened to redevelop the square overlooked by the Basilica of San Giovanni: the timetable is respected.
