Ñeembucú: Government closes assistance to more than 1,300 families affected by floods

Asunción, IP Agency.- The Minister of the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN), Arsenio Zárate reported on the assistance promoted in the districts of the department of Ñeembucú, affected by the floods. For today, it is estimated that 1,000 food kits will be delivered to the victims.

“We have delivered 850 kits, today we are going to reach 1,000 kits, but there are 1,300 families that need assistance and are currently affected by the floods,” said the head of the SEN.

He commented that they took a tour of the most affected areas such as; the districts of Pilar, Tacuaras, Guazú Cuá. We saw the need for rapid assistance in those municipalities, mainly in these last two, whose roads were practically flooded.

“We even had places where we might not reach with vehicles, so we resorted to the old method of using horses to assist the population,” he indicated in an interview with Paraguay TV.

He explained that the floods occurred due to the large amount of rain that fell in a short time, “Ñeembucú has many wetlands, which means the water has not been absorbed quickly by the soil and with this, these floods occur,” he expressed.

In that sense, he commented that each family is receiving a food kit in order to safeguard their food security, for regarding 15 days, until weather conditions improve.

“Later we will see once more with the municipalities and the governorates because the first aid that this has to provide in accordance with the law is the municipality, once it has exceeded its assistance capacity, the governors come in and finally, we come in.” as the National Emergency Secretariat,” he explained.

On this point, he mentioned that assistance is being practically immediate on instructions from the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, following coordinated actions with municipalities and the government.

“Once the water goes down, everything is at a level, we are going to have a special situation with small producers, who we estimate will need extra help; We should also go there with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock so that they are provided with at least seeds to replant their crops,” he expressed.

Likewise, he mentioned that the Government in alliance with the Yacyretá Binational Entity plans to develop the cleaning of the canals so that the water can flow more quickly and thus avoid new floods.

“We are delivering the food in coordination with the municipalities and the government so that we can reach the most vulnerable families as quickly as possible,” stated the senior state official.
