LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani broke Hideki Matsui’s major league home run record by a Japanese slugger with a big hit in the third inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers ended their three-game streak with a resounding 10-game victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.
Ohtani crushed a 423-foot line drive from Adrian Houser (0-2) that ended deep in right, the two-time American League MVP’s fifth homer of the year and his 176th in just over six seasons in the Major Leagues with the Angels and Dodgers. That number eclipses the record set by Matsui, who was a Yankees slugger and played 10 seasons in the majors.
Tyler Glasnow (4-1) struck out 10 and held off New York with seven singles in eight solid innings as Los Angeles snapped the Mets’ six-game winning streak and saved the last of it from a 3-6 home run.
Cuban Andy Pages hit his first career home run in the fifth inning in which the Dodgers scored eight runs, while Freddie Freeman and Will Smith also contributed two-run doubles and Mookie Betts produced a single in the fifth.
After winning 12 of 15 since starting the season 0-5, the Mets were shut out for the second time this year. New York had won eight of the previous nine games.
For the Mets, Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor was 1 for 2 and Tomás Nido was 1 for 3.
For the Dodgers, Cuban Andy Pages is 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Puerto Rican Enrique Hernández 1-1.
