The spacecraft’s ultraviolet camera Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory A (STEREO-A) de la NASA took exclusive photos of Cometa Diablo (12P/Ponks-Brooks) during a coronal mass ejection, also known as CME (Coronal Mass Ejection)before its perihelion which will take place this Sunday, April 21, when it will reach its closest point to the Sun from the constellation Taurus.

In the video, which was recorded on April 12, the celestial body is observed to pass by the planet Jupiter on its way towards the Sun until it hits a giant cloud of plasma (CME). That crash caused 12P/Ponks-Brooks to detach part of its tail.

This is not the first time that an event of this magnitude has been recorded in our solar system. Something similar happened to comet Nishimura in September 2023, when a CME destroyed the tail of the so-called “green comet” as it orbited the sun, and everything seems to indicate that comet Diablo might suffer the same fate.

Remember that on Sunday, April 21, comet Diablo can be seen in the sky with the naked eye in many countries around the world, especially those located in the northern hemisphere such as the United States, Mexico and Canada. It is not necessary to have special equipment. But if you have professional binoculars or telescopes you will have a better chance of locating it.

It should be noted that NASA’s STEREO-A Space Solar Observatory is closely monitoring Comet Diablo 12P/Pons-Brooks and also other space phenomena for study. So it is likely that we will have new images in the next few days.
