The Olympic Flame will pass through Patras on April 25, 2024, on its journey to Paris for the 33rd Olympiad. During its passage, it will honorably stand in the house where the creator of the Olympic Anthem, Kostis Palamas, was born. A small honoring ceremony is organized this day, at 4.30 pm, at 241 Corinthou Street, by the “Kostis Palamas” House of Letters.
For the preparation and implementation of this event, the House of Letters collaborates with the city’s cultural institutions. This is because the Olympic Anthem articulates the set of Olympic ideals in today’s era and promotes universal values. It is interesting to highlight its importance, as a cultural event, in the poetic landmark, which has been established in our city.
The “Kostis Palamas” House of Letters collaborates with the Polyphonic Choir of Patras, which under the direction of its Artistic Director Mo Stavros Solomos, is responsible for the artistic part of the event. Important here is the contribution of the renowned mezzo soprano Irini Karagianni, in curating the program.
At the same time, the Greek High School of Patras will honor the event, with its presentation of the event, while the contribution of the French Institute in Patras (Director: Georgia Petropoulos Conan) will also be important, which will participate with recitations, introducing the audience to the atmosphere of the Paris Olympics, with song and choreography by the students of the Institute (composition: “Le Coach” by Soprano), while the member of the French National Assembly and Vice-President of the Hellenic-French Friendship Committee, Mariette Karamanli, will welcome the event.
As part of the entire event, the Philharmonic Orchestra (Director: Giorgos Bourdopoulos) and the Mixed Choir (Director: Stavros Solomos) of the Organization, will perform the Olympic Anthem, as an act of honoring Kostis Palamas and his work (composition: Spyrou Samaras ). At the same time, the works: “1492 The Conquest of Paradise” and “Chariots of fire” by Vangeli Papathanassiou will be performed, as well as the work “Triumphal paean” by Stavros Solomos (recitation: Michalis Antonellos, percussion: Giorgos Lambrakos), which will be performed for first time and whose composition was made exclusively for the passage of the Olympic Flame.
The mezzo soprano Irini Karayanni will recite the works: “Dream Hymn” by Kostis Palamas, “7th Olympian” by Pindar and “Light of Olympia” by Takis Doxa. She will also perform the works: “Greece” by Kostis Palamas, composed by Michalis Vourtsis and “Arias of the Olympiad”, from the opera “Alexander the Great” with a libretto by Alekos Dafnomilis, composed by Iosif Benakis. Piano teacher Lousi Christodoulou will play the piano.
The Olympic Movement is represented at the event by the head of the Greek Olympic Mission in Paris, a fellow citizen, Petros Synodinos, while the Deputy Regional Governor of Western Greece, Charalambos Bonanos, will address a greeting. The program will be presented by Alexis Costalas.
We invite our fellow citizens to attend the event of the “Kostis Palamas” House of Letters, honoring the Poet and the spirit of the Olympic Games.
