Legendary Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli, will receive the honorary Palme d’Or award from the Cannes Film Festival, next May. This was stated by the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival, Wednesday (17/4).

The Oscar-winning studio, founded by Hayao Miyazaki, 40 years ago, is world famous for works such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Howl’s Moving Castle.

The awards will be the first time the Cannes Film Festival has given awards to groups rather than individuals.

Miyazaki rarely appears in public and his partner when he founded Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata, died in 2018.

Another founder of Studio Ghibli, Tohio Suzuki, said he was very honored and happy to receive an award from the Cannes Film Festival.

“The characters presented by Studio Ghibli capture our imagination with a colorful world and interesting stories,” said the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival.

“Berkay Guhbli, a Japanese animated film, has successfully stolen the attention of film fans because it presents both traditional and modern things,” they continued.

Miyazaki, 83, has repeatedly announced he will retire. However, last year, he released another film entitled The Boy and the Heron, which won the Oscar for best animated film.
