An underwater drone with unlimited autonomy was introduced in the USA

According to DARPA, the prototype is designed for long-duration missions in environments where humans cannot operate. Two propellers were placed in the rear part of the apparatus, which looks like a stingray. It is noted that testing of the prototype will begin in 2024.

As part of the project, they want to create an underwater vehicle whose service life is not limited to a couple of days. It is noted that the Northrop Grumman drone is equipped with “energy-saving technologies,” details of which are not disclosed. “Northrop has also developed energy harvesting technology that is said to be capable of providing Manta Ray with virtually unlimited range and autonomy,” the publication writes.

Created by Northrop Grumman and Seatrec, the Mission Unlimited underwater drone station, which so far exists only on paper, will be able to extract energy from the ocean’s temperature gradient and convert it into electricity. To charge underwater vehicles, they plan to use a self-insulating wet-mate connector, which provides an underwater connection.

The author suggested that the Manta Ray would be able to carry small drones, ammunition, as well as equipment for reconnaissance, mine hunting and underwater mapping.
