NEW YORK – A man who set himself on fire died near a New York courthouse, where hearings were being held in one of the cases once morest former US President Donald Trump, police said.

The New York Post quoted police as saying, “Max Azzarello died several hours following setting himself on fire.”

Earlier, New York Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said that Azzarello survived the accident but was in critical condition.

Police said Azzarello, 37, was not known to them before the incident and had no criminal record in New York.

According to NYPD officials who began examining the man’s social media posts, Azzarello, 37, who described himself as an “investigative researcher,” had recently begun publishing articles online promoting anti-establishment “conspiracy theories.” The man described the Covid-19 pandemic as an “economic doomsday tool.”

In a lengthy statement published shortly before his suicide, Azzarello criticized corrupt politicians and billionaires, said that his “self-immolation” was the “strongest possible protest” once morest the “totalitarian hoax,” and warned of an imminent “horrible fascist global coup.”

Seconds before setting himself on fire, he threw a number of colorful leaflets into the air related to the content of his final statement.
