This is confirmed by police inspector Thea Baastad in the police operational section in the Norwegian Police Directorate to NTB.
She does not want to comment on how many police officers are being sent to France during the Games.
– The French authorities have requested assistance from Norwegian dog teams, and this has been granted. Unfortunately, we cannot go into detail regarding the number, writes Baastad in an email.
It will be the first time Norwegian police have participated in such an operation outside the Nordic region.
– No, we have not assisted during an Olympics before. Norway’s agreement with the EU on adherence to the Prüm Decision entered into force in 2020.
The Prüm decision is a council decision from the EU and opens up the possibility for the police in one country to help the police in another country, Baastad explains:
– Where the purpose is to maintain order and security and prevent crime, writes the police inspector.
The daily newspaper mentioned the matter first.
– We have a plan B
In France, there are concerns regarding security ahead of the Games in July and August.
French authorities tightened security recently when Paris Saint-Germain hosted Barcelona in the Champions League following a terrorist threat.
President Emmanuel Macron has spoken regarding the large-scale opening ceremony, which for the first time in Olympic history will be held outside a stadium.
Macron has stated that there are alternatives if security is threatened.
– We have a plan B and a plan C, he said recently.
Over 300,000 spectators are expected for the opening ceremony, which will initially take place on a six kilometer long route on the river Seine.
Eurovision
Within the Nordic region, Norwegian police have assisted in joint operations several times.
– For example, we assisted Icelandic police in connection with a Council of Europe conference in Iceland last year, and Danish police assisted us in connection with a NATO foreign minister’s meeting last year. The Norwegian police will also assist the Swedish police during the running of the Eurovision Song Contest in May, Baastad says.
The Summer Olympics start on 26 July and last until 11 August.
