Trump says Ukraine’s fate is important to the United States

The EU quickly countered. EU Council President Charles Michel asked Trump to look into the facts and check the numbers.

– Let’s put the numbers on the table. And they show that the EU’s contribution to Ukraine is 143 billion euros, Michel wrote on X.

The post on Trump’s own website Truth Social came just days before the Republican-dominated House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine on Saturday.

Trump did not announce support for the aid package, nor the opposite. He spent most of the post criticizing European countries for not contributing enough to Ukraine.

– Why can’t Europe contribute as much as the USA to provide the help the country so desperately needs? Everyone agrees that Ukrainian strength and survival should be more important to Europe than to us. But it is also important for us, hammered the former president and ended the post with EUROPE, PICK UP THE SPEED!

The German Kiel Institute, which records aid to Ukraine, says that at the start of 2024, the EU’s pledges stood at 144.1 billion euros, while the US stood at 67.7 billion euros. However, concrete payments from the EU countries totaled 77.2 billion, as several of the promises of aid extend over many years.

Trump praised Poland two days ago following a meeting with Polish President Andzrej Duda in Trump Tower in New York. Poland has proposed that the NATO countries should spend 3 percent of their gross domestic product on defence. Today, the target is 2 percent.
