Through HoloLens 2, holographic images open the doors to the future of medicine with data and systems integration to expand healthcare professionals’ knowledge during surgical processes, training and administrative processes
São Paulo, April 19, 2024 – To bring advances in virtual reality technology to medical-hospital operations, Sírio-Libanês, through its technology vertical Alma Sírio-Libanês, has the support of Microsoft in the use of HoloLens 2, mixed reality glasses. The hospital is evaluating different possibilities for using this technology and has already started some proofs of concept with the device, which provides an immersive experience by combining the physical world with the digital, benefiting the planning and execution of procedures, accelerating flows, reducing errors and improving the relationship with the patient.
Sírio-Libanês’ initiatives with HoloLens 2 are examples of how technology can be used to improve the quality of medical care. Over the next three years, this is a technology that should open up new modalities and expand the range of services and create management processes in the hospital. “Mixed reality has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by providing enhanced data visualization, innovative training and education, facilitated collaboration between healthcare professionals and patient engagement,” says Diego Aristides, Chief Technology Officer at Alma Sírio-Libanês.
One of the scenarios in which HoloLens 2 is already being evaluated is equipment maintenance, both building and clinical engineering. This way, the on-site technician can communicate remotely and more interactively with a specialist, who does not need to be at the equipment location to perform maintenance, making the process easier and overcoming geographic barriers to support. Sírio-Libanês currently has considerable coverage in its operations, with several hospital units in São Paulo and Brasília, outpatient units and offices in companies and entities through its Population Health program. “With the use of mixed reality, professionals can visualize data in a more immersive and interactive way, allowing for more accurate diagnoses and more effective actions for both medical and other services. Additionally, the technology can be used for medical training, procedural simulations and remote collaboration between healthcare professionals,” says Aristides.
According to Andrea Cerqueira, vice president of Corporate Sales for Customers and Startups at Microsoft Brazil, the possibilities offered by mixed reality with HoloLens 2 are immense and revolutionize the healthcare sector. “Technologies based on mixed reality are emerging with great potential to improve collaboration and optimize team work in a remote environment. With Sírio, we are carrying out extensive work that ranges from equipment maintenance to medical work with patients. Our collaboration involves creating solutions that will impact the training of healthcare professionals, remote assistance from a doctor to his team, which will contribute to carrying out procedures that, without the need for the professional to be in the same physical environment as the rest of the team, will help ensure that care is provided even more quickly, in addition to testing with imaging exams that are bringing a new possibility to these procedures” he concludes.
In the medium term, Sírio-Libanês is starting the integration process so that a patient’s imaging exams can be unified, such as tomography, ultrasound and resonance, and applied via Hololens 2 in holographic images during a procedure. This way, the doctor will be able to see the real image and the image from all previous diagnostic tests at the same time, directing the professional with images that his field of vision does not have access to at the time of the operation. The images are three-dimensional, that is, by changing the angle of your head, the doctor will be able to see other complementary images that are not visible to the naked eye. “The adoption of mixed reality in healthcare is an evolving field, there is still a lot of opportunity to be explored and it is this potential that we are discovering” informs Conrado Tramontini, Manager of Garagem Deep Tech, the team that leads mixed reality initiatives in the healthcare sector. Soul.
Sírio-Libanês has already started training interventional radiologists for a pilot test of the use of HoloLens 2 technology. All image handling itself has a learning curve process, as well as the integrated management of each patient’s information so that it is available via HoloLens 2 for doctors. “We expect to have doctors using this technology within 18 to 24 months,” explains Tramontini.
Among the other functions that are already being evaluated by Sírio-Libanês, in partnership with Microsoft, there is the use of HoloLens 2 to direct punctures, which is currently done inside the room with the tomography device to position the needle. With the use of previous images, this puncture might, in the future, be done with the support of mixed reality glasses, helping the professional to direct the needle to the correct location. This applicability is also in proof of concept and should take 3 years to be validated, informs Tramontini. “Initiatives like these from Sírio-Libanês are an important step in validating a technology that has the potential to significantly improve the quality of medical care and transform the way healthcare professionals work”, he concludes.
