In the history of the British Dyson, considered the Apple of household appliances, there are two flaws: the broken dream of the self-driving electric car and a certain timidity in robot vacuum cleaners. The latest one, the 360 Heurist, was launched in 2020 but we know that it never convinced the Dyson engineers. Four years later they launched the Dyson 360 Vis Nav on the market, a very powerful, innovative machine, different from those crowding the market. The name is reviewable, too complicated, but the device contains some interesting ideas. Guiding it are 26 sensors that perform specific tasks. Among these is a piezoelectric one that monitors dust levels 15,000 times per second. To “see” it uses a fisheye lens to have a panoramic view, a laser that allows you to see microscopic dust particles and a light that activates when the environment is dark. The motor promises up to 110,000 rpm and Dyson says it offers six times more suction than any other robot device. The brush then combines three ways of deep cleaning with powerful suction. We tested it for a week. We were convinced by the ability to detect the edges of the walls of a room. A side actuator is used. Excellent when it goes under furniture, it also performs well in the dark. However, pay attention to the dimensions: it overcomes obstacles up to 21 mm but does not pass under furniture lower than 99 mm. Four modes. The rapid mode is recommended for daily and routine cleaning and has an autonomy of up to 60 minutes. Once the charge is used up, the machine automatically returns to its station to recharge and in the app it tells you each time what it has done.
Assembly and configuration are simple: connect the charger to the docking base, configure the application and you’re done.
To evaluate it we focused on poor visibility conditions – we made it work in the dark – and on pets (there are two cats and a dog in the house). As well as an eight-year-old who makes a mess every time he moves. He vacuums everything thanks to the very powerful motor.
The real problem is the price: 1299 euros. It means 3-400 euros more than the competition. The Roomba i7+ can now be found under a thousand euros. Then it does not have the automatic emptying or cleaning function. But it’s a question of convenience. More serious if the boy or girl is messy is navigating in a bedroom that seems to have exploded. In other words, he doesn’t always see toys left on the floor. And sometimes he gets intimidated by the cat.
