41 complaints of intra-school violence and bullying in one week – 2024-04-19 09:22:35

“We have already recorded 41 complaints of intra-school violence and bullying on the platform which was launched only last Tuesday, when the prime minister announced it. Of these, eight are from students and 33 from parents” revealed the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Kyriakos Pierrakakisspeaking to ANT1 and the show “Morning Greece” and to journalists Giorgos Papadakis and Maria Anastasopoulou.

“For the first time since the debate on school violence began, we have tangible evidence and we can rely on it and protect every child” added the minister, then describing all sides of the national campaign on the problem, in a structured policy where platform is just a parameter.

“We are looking together with all the other states to see and understand why, in the post-Covid era, cases of youth violence have increased so much, especially at school. Our research shows that while the number of cases decreased, their intensity increased significantly. It is typical that since 2019, the cases of young people aged 13-17 facing criminal charges have more than doubled,” Mr. Pierrakakis pointed out.

The minister referred to the doubling of psychologists in school structures compared to the previous four years and to the training procedures for teachers that will begin immediately, he clarified that in the announced policy we are not talking regarding penalties but regarding “a framework of consequences when the school’s operating rules are violated” and revealed that “teachers are already embracing the measures announced and consider them an important development that will help them deal with the problem much more effectively”.

Mr. Pierrakakis made a special reference to the issue of the use of mobile phones in schools. ” There is already a formal ban on the possession of mobile phones at school, but the issue is the use and especially the illegal use. The consequences will now be serious, especially in cases of violation of personal data of third parties, it will be immediately decided to change the school environment”.

The minister reiterated that dealing with intra-school violence is a national issue and cannot be targeted by the opposition, he noted that “all the opposition’s objections to the announced measures are generalities and no original proposal has been submitted by the other parties, they state that they do not they like the measures but they don’t say what they don’t like and why.”

The changes that are being prepared at the school will follow those already instituted in professional and higher education. Mr. Pierrakakis emphasized that “serious changes will follow at the school. We are starting with the digital tutorial that will be implemented immediately, as a pilot, with Mathematics and Language in the three classes of the Middle School and completed from September in the High School, with a special emphasis on the third year of the High School, in a live broadcast. We will keep all the positive aspects of the nationwide exams, mainly their immutability as a procedure and we will change the way of choosing the subjects in the exams, they will be from the Subject Bank with graded difficulty. We want the Lyceum to be strengthened.”

Regarding the European elections, Mr. Pierrakakis stated that “I am in favor of the election of MEPs by vote”, defined the electoral goal of New Democracy “at the highest possible percentage” and reiterated the great importance of political stability in the country for the next day in Europe and the great challenges that this will bring.
