BB.lv: If the eastern border is closed, Latvia will lose 25,000 jobs

This is countered by the damage that this decision will bring to Latvia itself, and one of the arguments is the loss of jobs in the field of transit and logistics.

Should this really be a concern at a time when Latvia is experiencing chronic labor shortages and is debating the possibility of opening its doors to migrant workers?

Cargoes of manganese ore that pass through Latvia to Russia have excited the public. There are even calls to completely close the eastern border, stopping all cargo transportation in this direction.

Calculations are circulating in government corridors that if the eastern border is completely closed, Latvia will lose 25,000 jobs, mainly in transit, logistics and related industries. This represents almost 3% of the total workforce.

In March of this year, the State Employment Agency registered 19,570 vacancies, which is regarding 4,000 less than a year ago, so theoretically there should be plenty of work, and most of the 25,000 people who suddenly lost their jobs will be able to fill these vacancies (Latvijas Avīze ).
