Adult Clinical PSYCHOLOGIST, graduate of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia, Nirmala Ika, said that one way to detect people who are experiencing stress is to see how the person’s daily activities are, whether they are still able to work and interact with other people.
“Actually, we can see how he functions in everyday matters, whether he can still work or not, whether he can still interact with people,” said Ika, quoted on Tuesday (16/4).
Apart from that, if someone starts to withdraw, has difficulty concentrating, or experiences changes in behavior such as becoming quiet or irritable, this is something to be wary of. It is important to approach them and offer help if needed.
“Sometimes we need to chat with them, if we see that they have changed, for example our neighbor often hangs out outside, why hasn’t he come out for a few days now? Maybe it’s okay for him to go out, we’ll ask what’s wrong,” said Ika .
According to Ika, involving family, friends or co-workers can also be an important step. People around you may be more sensitive to changes in a person’s behavior and can provide the necessary support.
Ika said that using social networks such as the RT/RW system can also help in reaching those who are experiencing difficulties.

In the end, there’s no harm in asking the people closest to you regarding their condition, because a simple question can be a good start to open a conversation regarding someone’s mental well-being.
“It’s true that sometimes if someone withdraws, there’s nothing we can do, so it’s also difficult. At least you can check or ask someone close to you,” said Ika.
By caring and listening, the people around you can become a significant source of support for people who are having a lot of problems and are experiencing stress. (Ant/Z-1)
