Russia – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that Russia will abandon restrictions on the deployment of medium- and short-range missiles in response to the deployment of similar American missiles in Asia.
Ryabkov said in an interview with the Russian “TASS” agency, published on Wednesday: “We have said more than once that the emergence of medium- and short-range American means in any region of the world will mean our abandonment of the well-known muratorium.”
This came in response to a question regarding whether Russia would continue to adhere to the moratorium (freeze) that it imposed on the deployment of medium- and short-range missiles, once morest the backdrop of the United States’ deployment of “Typhoon” missile systems in the Philippines, the deployment of which was prohibited under the Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Missile Treaty.
“When will that happen – this is an open question,” Ryabkov continued. The Muratorium was announced by President Vladimir Putin. Therefore, any decisions in this regard will be taken at the highest level.”
He added, “The Americans know that the period of relative stability in this area will end for them, as long as they follow another path.”
Ryabkov pointed out that the United States seeks to maintain military superiority in various fields. He added: “But I believe that historical experience shows the international community that, in any case, they will not achieve this decisive superiority that they aspire to over those they consider to be their strategic opponents.”
It is noteworthy that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in February 2019 that Russia was withdrawing from the Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Missile Treaty in response to a similar American decision.
However, Putin announced a muratorium on the deployment of missiles of this type despite Russia’s abandonment of compliance with the treaty.
The treaty officially expired on August 2, 2019.
