A woman in Brazil was arrested following arriving at a bank with the body of a person who had died hours before, to try to receive a loan that had already been approved in the name of the deceased, local media reported.

The unusual event occurred this Tuesday in a branch of the Itaú bank in the Bangu neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, where Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes entered with a wheelchair in which the body of whom she claimed was resting. his uncle, who had to sign a document for the delivery of 17,000 reais (regarding $3,200).

While being treated, the bank workers began to suspect the man’s state of health, since he was unable to hold a pen and might not even lift his head.

The woman acted normally at all times and asked her supposed uncle to sign the loan paper, holding his hand and head several times.

She didn’t seem scared or worried regarding the situation and was even smiling. However, the man’s paleness and his lack of response led the employees to call the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu).

“He came in dead”

A medical unit went to the scene and found that the subject, identified as Roberto Braga, 68, had been dead for several hours, following which the woman was arrested and taken to the police station.

According to her testimony, she was the old man’s niece and in charge of his care. She added that her uncle was weak and in fragile health.

“She tried to get him to sign, but the employees thought he was sick and called Samu. He entered the bank dead. She claims to be his caregiver, and in any case she will answer for the crimes. We will continue the investigation with other family members and find out if he was alive on the date of the loan,” stated Police Chief Fábio Luiz.

The authorities are trying to determine if it was a crime of theft through fraud or swindle and if the detainee was really related to the victim.

In addition, security camera videos are being reviewed to find out if other people are involved.
