who is Damien Guerot, the French “hero”?

He is nicknamed “the man with the post”. Frenchman Damien Guerot was at the Sydney shopping center when an individual attacked customers with a knife on Saturday April 13, causing the death of six of them, as well as that of a security guard.

While going to the gym with his friend Silas Despreaux, Damien Guerot heard someone shouting that a man was stabbing other people. The two men run to understand what is happening and see the individual armed with his knife: “We saw it coming… and we thought: ‘we have to try and stop it'”told Damien Guerot to the Australian media 7NEWS.

Using a pole, the Frenchman intervened at the top of an escalator, preventing the individual from continuing to the upper floor. An act of courage which did not escape the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, who offered Damien Guerot Australian citizenship.

“I tell Damien Guerot, who takes care of his visa applications, that he is welcome here and that he can stay as long as he wants,” he said. “He is someone we would happily welcome as an Australian citizen, although of course it would be a loss for France. We thank him for his extraordinary bravery.”he then added.

Emmanuel Macron reacted on Tuesday April 16, expressing his “very great pride and recognition” towards the two French people who “behaved like true heroes”, he declared.
