  • Severe storms with heavy rain flooded parts of Dubai.

  • Air traffic was also severely restricted as a result – hundreds were stranded at Dubai International Airport.

  • 36-year-old Jojo Ucan expects that he will only be able to fly back to Switzerland on Friday instead of Wednesday.

Land under in Dubai: The heaviest rainfall in decades completely flooded parts of the city. The water masses also had a severe impact on international air traffic: at times it was impossible at Dubai International Airport (DXB) nothing at all. Jojo Ucan, who traveled to the desert city for a short business trip, also felt this.

Aggressive atmosphere at the airport

“There is pure chaos at the airport,” the 36-year-old told 20 Minutes. The mood is rather aggressive and there is great uncertainty. On the display, the time for boarding his flight moves back one hour. “The airline Emirates has not officially canceled my flight, but we assume that we will not be able to make the return journey until Friday,” says Jojo. That’s why he went back to the city, to a hotel, on an unplanned basis.

It was thundering so violently outside Jojo’s hotel room in Dubai.

The storm has now passed, but even flights that were supposed to have taken place on Tuesday are still showing up at the airport. Nevertheless, Jojo, who owns a company that makes tailor-made suits, was already able to check in. He has already checked in his luggage. “Since I don’t have any hand luggage, I have to get my clothes back as quickly as possible. I hope the Duabi Mall will be open once more soon,” he jokes.

Involuntarily extended business trip

The business trip was actually only supposed to last three days. Now Jojo misses around 15 to 20 customer appointments in Switzerland. “Fortunately, the customers in question are understanding, and I can also hand over some of the appointments,” he says.

What angers the businessman most is Emirates’ customer service. «It’s an absolute disaster. There was no information point, there were no employees at the airport,” says Jojo and continues: “Vouchers or hotel recommendations? None.” Now he hopes that the situation will improve by Friday – and that the airline will get back to him soon.
