A Uber is introducing a new feature that allows the recording of races using the cell phone’s front camera throughout Brazil, aiming to provide greater safety for drivers and users. The feature was already being tested in some cities in October 2023, and is now being made widely available. According to the company, all recordings will be encrypted on the cell phone itself.

Uber adds that neither the company nor the driver will have direct access to the recording. Before the trip begins, the user will be informed that the trip will be recorded and will have the option to cancel or request another vehicle, if desired.

The trip recording will automatically start when the driver approaches the boarding point and will end 20 seconds following the passenger disembarks. Only the cell phone’s front camera will be used for recording, and its activation will be optional on the driver’s part.

Video files can only be accessed by the Uber team if a security incident is reported to the app by the driver or user. Additionally, all recordings will be deleted following 7 days unless a security incident is reported to Uber.

The functionality will be gradually implemented for all Uber drivers across the country in the coming weeks, but it is now available in cities where it was in the testing phase, such as Manaus, Recife, Curitiba, São José dos Campos (SP), João Pessoa, Campinas (SP), Santos (SP), Petrópolis (RJ), Itajaí (SC) and Goiânia.
