Former interim Minister of Regional Development Helder Melillo Lopes Cunha Silva was appointed to the position of executive secretary at the Ministry of Cities, in the current government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The appointment was published this Monday, 15th, in the Official Gazette of the Union)DOU).

In December 2022, Helder held the position at the Ministry of Regional Development during the administration of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as substitute and interim minister, following the dismissal of then minister Daniel Ferreira. Previously, Cunha Silva was the executive secretary of the department.

Now, Helder Cunha Silva has been appointed to be “number two” of the City Ministry, led by Jader Filho (MDB). The department is responsible for the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program, one of the main showcases of the Lula government.

Cunha Silva’s name had been considered when an internal split in the MDB was blocking the appointment of the executive secretary, as shown by Coluna do Estadão. Behind the scenes, the information is that the leader of the MDB in the Chamber, Isnaldo Bulhões (AL), was trying to elevate the national secretary of Urban and Metropolitan Development, Carlos Tomé, to the position. However, minister Jader Filho resisted because he wanted someone closer to him .
