THE Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that weather conditions for the next week until April 21 2024 will be marked by an increase in rainfall with varying intensity.

BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto, said that this condition was triggered by the activity of several atmospheric dynamic phenomena, including the activity of Equatorial Rossby atmospheric waves, Kelvin atmospheric waves, and cyclonic circulation.

“The combination of the influence of these phenomena is predicted to give rise to the potential for moderate-heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds with impacts such as floods, landslides, flash floods, puddles, strong winds, fallen trees and slippery roads. “This condition will last in parts of Indonesia until April 21 2024,” he said in an official statement, Tuesday (16/4).

Equatorial Rossby atmospheric wave activity is predicted to be active in parts of southern Sumatra, central to eastern Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, central to northern Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua and Papua. This might increase the potential for rain in the area in the next week.

Apart from that, said Guswanto, Kelvin atmospheric waves which are predicted to be active in the Sumatra region in the next week might trigger the potential for the growth of rain clouds in the region.

Meanwhile, cyclonic circulation was observed in the South China Sea north of Kalimantan and the Pacific Ocean north of Papua. These circulations form a convergence area extending from Central Kalimantan to West Kalimantan, in the Seram Sea and from West Papua to Mountain Papua, as well as forming a confluence area of the Sulu Sea and Seram Sea to Cendrawasih Bay.

“The lability of the atmosphere at the local scale which is still observed to be quite strong is also capable of increasing the potential for rain cloud growth in Indonesia,” explained Guswanto.

Head of the Center for Public Meteorology Andri Ramdhani added that the potential for moderate-heavy intensity rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in the period 16-21 April 2024 might occur in most of Sumatra, especially the west coast, Central Java, East Java, Bali, Nusa Southeast, Kalimantan and West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Coast of North Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku and most of Papua.

“Therefore, especially for travelers who will return overseas to be careful and always be alert. Follow the government’s directions and advice,” he added.

Andri also appealed to the public, especially those who live in areas with steep/mountainous/cliff topography or prone to landslides and floods, to be aware of the impacts caused by extreme weather. For example, floods, flash floods, landslides, slippery roads, fallen trees and reduced visibility.

Another thing that needs to be watched out for is the phenomenon of Antecedent Precipitation, namely the occurrence of rainfall that falls beforehand with the possibility of exacerbating the impact of extreme weather.

BMKG also urges the public to recognize the potential for disasters in their environment and begin to understand how to reduce the risk of these disasters. For example, by not throwing rubbish carelessly, working together to maintain cleanliness, and organizing the surrounding environment.

“Please understand that what we are conveying is the general condition in each region. To obtain more accurate weather information and weather change information at any time with higher resolution in each sub-district, the public is encouraged to access the InfoBMKG application,” he concluded.
