Where does the deep-seated hatred between Israel and Iran come from?

In 2015, under President Obama, the US signed a historic deal with Iran. In that ‘Iran deal’, Iran promised more openness regarding its nuclear program. In return, the US promised to relax some of the sanctions on the country. The agreement was positively received worldwide, except in Israel.

Obama’s successor, Donald Trump, sided entirely with Israel and decided in 2018 not to renew the deal with Iran.

Since then, Iran has felt less compelled to adhere to the agreements and in 2022 the news arrived that the country had started building a new nuclear power plant.

The West is aiming for a new deal, but no progress has been made so far. If Iran were to become a nuclear power, it would make the conflict with Israel much more difficult than it already is.
