New Zealand authorities say the resource Accident Detection of the iPhone was essential in helping to locate the bodies of two young women who died in a traffic accident. Their vehicle was found in an embankment.
The tragedy happened last Monday (8/4) and the victims were identified as Joanna Beach e Bondi Reihana Richmond. According to police, they were driving through Mount Richmond Park when the car fell off the embankment.
Although the police are investigating the causes of the accident, the rescue team confirmed that Crash Detection on at least one of the iPhones belonging to them alerted authorities to the incident, making it easier to locate the bodies.
The location highlighted by the alert was essential in locating the deceased young women. A helicopter was used in the initial search, along with police officers on foot and a police dog. Upon finding the young women, a SAR (search and rescue) operation was launched, involving LandSar volunteers, to recover their bodies.
Last year, a man was saved alive following falling from a cliff of more than 120 meters, in California (United States), thanks to Accident Detection and also the Emergency SOS via satellite.
The victim’s iPhone, according to police, alerted emergency services following the accident, allowing the rescue to be carried out quickly. At the time, rescuers highlighted the importance of technology, which has already helped save several other people.
