Unlocking the Benefits of Ginger for Weight Loss and Metabolic Health

Ginger helps regulate appetite and reduce body fat. The compounds found in ginger stimulate many biological activities in the body that have an anti-obesity effect, which contributes to stimulating the digestion process faster and accelerating the movement of food within the digestive system.

Some research indicates that ginger may help with weight loss, and most of the research on its benefits for weight loss has been conducted in animal models, while research in humans has been mostly limited to very small studies.

Here’s what the research says regarding how effective ginger is for weight loss, weight maintenance, and other cardiovascular-related metabolic processes.

1. It helps with satiety

In a small 2012 study, 10 men took 2g of dried ginger powder dissolved in hot water following breakfast. The results showed that the participants felt full longer following drinking the ginger drink.

In addition, when participants drank the ginger drink, they recorded a 43-calorie increase in calorie burning following the meal compared to just the water drink.

However, this research is limited because it was a limited trial, as measurements occurred following only one ginger drink, unlike a long-term study.

These results suggest that ginger may have an effect on a person’s ability to lose weight, says Marie-Pierre Saint-Onge, a nutrition researcher at Columbia University and co-author of this study.

2. It may help burn fat

A small 2019 study in South Korea gave 80 obese people steamed ethanolic ginger extract, which is richer in Shogaol than regular ginger, or a placebo to see if ginger helped reduce body fat.

Although both groups were told to follow their typical diet, the study found that the group that took the ginger extract lost more fat than the control group.

This suggests that a ginger supplement may facilitate weight loss even without other dietary changes.

3. It may reduce insulin secretion

A 2018 review showed that ginger had no effect on insulin levels but reduced insulin resistance, which might be a factor in alleviating the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

There is also evidence that maintaining weight loss is associated with improved insulin sensitivity.

4. May help with weight management

The same 2018 review also found that ginger consumption was associated with lower body weight, waist-to-hip ratio, and impaired fasting glucose, despite no change in BMI.
