Competing in the 5 thousand kilometers of the event that took place at Azuza Pacific University, located in southern California, Grijalva, registered 13 minutes, 21 seconds and 09 hundredths.
This allowed him to complete heat 2 in the second placebehind the Somali by birth, Abdihamid Nur, who did 13:20.96. The ‘Tarzan’ is followed in third, fourth and fifth place by the Swiss, Morgan Le Guen, with 13:25.59, and the Americans, Ben Perrin, with 13:30.73, and Ben Shearer, with 13:32.98respectively.
Regarding the result, the 23-year-old commented on his feelings regarding this tournament, which he described as a “training”.
“Happy for this race, it’s more like training. Right now in April it’s more regarding training. In summer, I’m faster, because 13 minutes is a little slow. In summer, in races I do 12:40 in 5 thousand meters”he commented.
“I wanted to run this race because I don’t have many opportunities to do it here in the United States and the next one is going to be in Europe, so it was like training”he explained to the Correr Sin Fronteras page.
“I’m going to Europe the last week of May and the first week of June to Oslo and Stockholm to compete in 5,000 and 3,000 meters. Just those races and then the Olympics come in August and that will be it”concluded the Guatemalan, who in Tokyo 2020 was in the 12th place in the world.
Regarding that mythical result, as he had the best performance by a Latin American in that event, Grijalva, upon his arrival in the country on March 19 to carry out his immigration procedures, told Prensa Libre: “I don’t know how I achieved it. Now I have more experience and last year I was fourth in the world. It is possible to win, but I need a lot of work and sacrifice to achieve it”.
For its part, in the same tournament, Viviana Aroche also competed, who completed the 5,000 meters of the women’s branch, coming in fifteenth place, timing 15:57:10.
After heat 2, Aroche said she felt upset regarding starting the season, but due to the result, she was not entirely happy. “Happy to be opening the season, but also a little dissatisfied with the result. I expected a little more. But sometimes the body doesn’t respond the way you want”he pointed.
“I liked it more last year, I think because I like competing in 10,000 more. This year it was difficult for me to place myself, I had to run in front to be able to do it and it was very difficult for me. They kicked me a lot behind, but I think it’s because the level that was very even”he remarked.
It is worth mentioning that the tournament began in April and is traditionally one of the fastest matches of the season. The competition also boasts the best athletes and university athletics teams from all over the United States and the world.
