Canadians living in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces are due to receive their first of four Canadian Carbon Rebate payments scheduled for 2024 on Monday, if they have filed their tax return. 2023 income before March 15.

Payments vary depending on household size. For a family of four, they reach $190 in New Brunswick and $450 in Alberta.

Rebate amounts are set each year based on the amount of carbon pricing Ottawa expects to collect in each province.

Quebec, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories have their own consumer carbon pricing system, so their residents do not receive the federal payment.

Yukon and Nunavut use the federal system, but have an agreement to distribute the rebates themselves.

The rebates are sent to offset what people who live in affected provinces pay in carbon pricing when they buy fuel, so they don’t end up at a disadvantage.

People who take steps to reduce their fuel consumption fare even better, since they still get the same discounts while spending less on carbon pricing.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer estimates that regarding 80% of Canadians receive more in Federal Carbon Rebate than they pay in carbon tax.

He also says the economic impact of carbon pricing might drive down wages over time, erasing that benefit for some Canadians. The government argues, however, that climate change can also cause economic damage if nothing is done to combat it.
